Your Gift in Action

Editorial Strategy, Creative Direction, Interviewing, Production, Distribution

I created this piece to capture how great teaching evolves over time—and what faculty bring back when they’re given room to keep learning.

I interviewed 25 faculty and staff members, then shaped their reflections into a publication about curiosity, growth, and the experiences that influence their work. The stories range from small classroom breakthroughs to travel, research, and professional development.

I developed the concept and editorial structure, conducted every interview, and wrote the full piece. I also created the visual direction and worked closely with the designer to bring the stories together.

Selected INTERVIEW Excerpt

Interviewed and edited by Haley Hicks.

When people ask what I do, my first answer is, “I teach high school chemistry.”

My second answer is, “Actually, I teach 15-year-olds.”

Sometimes that second answer is more important than the first.

Chemistry is the content, and it matters. But the real work is helping students grow as people. They are at an age when they are figuring out how to handle stress, how to treat others, how to treat themselves, and how to become more independent.

So yes, I want them to learn chemistry. But I also want them to leave my class with a stronger sense of how to be a good human. If they forget some of the chemistry, I can live with that. But I hope they remember the conversations about responsibility, kindness, and how to move through the world thoughtfully.
